Introduction

Thank you for your interest in joining the ‘Notch’s World’ Minecraft world server, run by Andre G. (aka Eddy). This tutorial is to help new players prepare their systems to play on the server, since it is modded, it will require a few steps to hop on.

My personal opinion is to move all YOUR Minecraft world and profile data to a place that can be backed up to a service like OneDrive or Google Drive Backup or just using simple and free utilities to back up to an external drive, etc.

Notes on using the native Minecraft Launcher solely

Depending on what you intend on doing, whether you intend to play single-player modded Minecraft or only intending on playing on my server, you may want to place the modded Forge 1.12.2 directory.

If you intend on solely playing on my server or any similar server, you may use the default Minecraft directory (e.g. C:\Users\Your_Name\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft) as the directory for your modded profile experience.

However, if you intend on messing with modded 1.12.2 in single-player or creating new modded worlds, I recommend setting a different directory for your new worlds in the new profile.

This can be simplified if you choose to use either CurseForge or MultiMC, however using CurseForge will complicate your ability to backup, as you would have to replicate or use junctions or symbolic links, or have to manually or use dedicated backup software.

Method 1: Use CurseForge

The best way to play on this server now is using CurseForge! Download CurseForge then add this profile or search for the ‘Notch’s World CMP’ in the modpack search.

Be sure to remember to increase the RAM allocation for Minecraft, when prompted…

Less than 5 GB of RAM: Upgrade your device and acquire more memory
6 GB of RAM: Set max to 4096 MB
8 GB of RAM or more: Set max to 6144 MB

Method 2: Use MultiMC

If you feel that the Minecraft Launcher is too slow, use many different Minecraft instances, or simply don’t like CurseForge. I’d recommend to use MultiMC

Step 1: Download MultiMC

Visit the MultiMC download page and select the link that corresponds to the operating system that you are using.

For Microsoft Windows

  1. Download MultiMC
  2. Extract the archive to %localappdata%\Programs folder (you should have a MultiMC folder in %localappdata%\Programs)
  3. Create a shortcut from the new local user programs folder for MultiMC (%localappdata%\Programs) to your Start Menu programs list by copying the multimc.exe file and navigating to the local user program list folder (%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs) and renaming it MultiMC (Minecraft)
  4. Optional: Copy the start menu shortcut to your desktop

For Apple macOS

  1. Download MultiMC
  2. Extract the archive and copy the application to your Applications folder

Step 3: Set up MultiMC

  1. Select your display language
  2. Click Next
  3. Select Java 8 (it may say 1.8.0_…) if not selected already (if skipped the step to install Java, go back and install Java)
  4. Set max RAM allocation, set the value, as follows:
Less than 5 GB of RAM: Upgrade your device and acquire more memory
6 GB of RAM: Set max to 4096 MB
8 GB of RAM or more: Set max to 6144 MB
  5. Click Next

  9. Click Add Profile
  10. Click Add Microsoft Account
  11. Sign into your Microsoft Account that is linked to your Minecraft Java account and follow the prompts
  12. Click OK

Note: Each time there is an update to the modpack you must remove the existing modpack installed on your system and import the newer version.

  1. Click Add Instance on the toolbar

  1. Click OK

Method 3: With the modder script

Using the MC modder / config_forge_only tool, you can simply the work of installing Forge. Since the file that the Minecraft Forge team only provides the installer that requires a full install of Java to run, which it is the only time you will need to Java to run modded Minecraft, since the modern Minecraft launcher has its own copy of Java. This tool uses the Java made available by the Minecraft launcher, so it removes the need to install Java, which is an antiquated software platform, anyway.

1. Download the modder tool

Download the modder tool, that will intuitively configure Minecraft Forge for you! Just tell it where you want to use modded Minecraft when asked and done! If you are unable to download the tool or have issues with it, head down to method two.

2. Use the mod extractor to extract to your modded Minecraft profile directory

Download the EXE file and run it, when you are asked to where you would like to extract its files, navigate to the modded Minecraft profile directory, to the mods folder. If there is no “mods” folder, then create it and extract those files into it. The typical Minecraft profile directory is at %localappdata%\.minecraft

Method 4: Without the modder script (100% manual)

If you are unable to use the MC modder / config_forge_only tool, don’t have access to it, or have issues running it, you can manually do everything the tool does for you.

If you are using either macOS or Linux, if you have issues using CurseForge, I recommend you use MultiMC, instead.

Note: Method 4 applies only to Windows

Step 1. Identify where your Minecraft installation located

To summarize points made in the introduction, depending on how you want play modded Minecraft 1.12.2, you will need to decide on how you want to set it up. Once you made up your mind, make note of where this file location / directory is, as you will need to know this for the rest of this tutorial.

Make sure you have the Minecraft installed before continuing.

Use Minecraft’s copy of Java (advanced)

The best way (albeit the most complex) to install Minecraft Forge is to use the copy of Java included with the Minecraft launcher.

  1. Open Command Prompt
  2. Identify the Minecraft install directory (not the one in the AppData; the one that is typically in C:\Program Files\Minecraft) and change to said directory
    – The Minecraft install directory has a “bin” and “game” folder
  3. Go into the Java bin folder
  4. Run the command:
  5. Type: javaw -jar [forge location goes here]
  6. Press Enter

The Forge installer should be open, if not, check if you made any errors in spelling or file location.
  7. Select Install Client
  8. Optional: Change if needed to the directory to where you want your modded Minecraft instance to be
  9. Click OK

Wait for the Forge installer to download all required libraries and files. This may take a while.
